Debunking the Souls-like Label: An Analysis of Black Myth Wukong

Is Black Myth Wukong a souls like game?
So before I give you my opinion,
the first thing we have to talk about is that the idea of souls like
is not really a real concept.
It’s something the fans came up with,
so it’s not any real guidelines for it.
But I do think a lot of people are being very disingenuous
when they say
that this game doesn’t have a lot of similarities with souls like
or souls games like,
I’ve seen a lot of creators on this app say things like
souls games aren’t the only action RPG’s out there
and said that this game can resemble Dark Souls,
Bethesda, or even god of war.
And I’ll call bullshit. Like, sure,
all action RPG’s have some things in common,
but very surface level things like maybe have the ability to heal
or maybe have a stamina bar
or have a special button, the inclusion of light and heavy attacks.
But the difference is when developing a game,
there’s a lot of intentionality behind the gameplay.
Games like Bayonetta and Devil may cry
aren’t trying to teach you how to be patient.
These games want you to mash the most buttons you can
as fast as you can. Now,
fans have classified these games as hacking slash.
Are we really gonna see here and say that this game is a hacking slash?
Even when people say this game is like god of war,
I’m like, really?
Like, sure,
These games have a few things in common,
like the environment. Like,
it’s a very mystical environment,
and you’re playing as a god.
You also have a huge arsenal of weapons,
so you can fight in a lot of different ways.
But after that, the similarities kind of stop.
Like mobility alone.
I don’t know how you guys can play Black MILF and then think,
oh, yeah,
Ragnarok. Like what?
Like, let’s be real.
There’s a reason why the developers came out and said, hey,
this isn’t a souls title, so don’t view it that way.
Because they understood that.
Yes,
they are a lot of strong similarities between this and souls titles.
They didn’t come out and say, hey,
this isn’t god of war. Like,
let’s be real now. Yes,
it doesn’t have a strong parry system like the other souls titles,
but I would say that Black Myth looks wise
and kind of just like how it feels to me,
is the most similar to Sekiro.
Now for all you souls fans,
I’m not saying that it is Sekiro.
I’m just saying if I want to put it on a line
and put which game would be closer to it,
will definitely lean on the soul side.
Closer to Sekiro than god of war?
In my opinion, god of war is closer to Kingdom Hearts than
it is definitely Black Milk. Like y’all tripping
