Can I recommend post apocalyptic games that aren’t fallout? Of course I can. Get ready for a long list. First up, I had to include one of my favorite series of all time, The Last of us. There’s no other apocalyptic world out there quite like The Last of us. And the story hits hard. It’s about this virus called the cordyceps virus. And on outbreak happens and then like zombie type people emerge and the story takes place like I think like 20 something years after the outbreak. I don’t want to give anything else away about the first or the second game, but please play it if you haven’t.
Next up, we have the Dead Island series. I’ve yet to play the second one, but the first two, 10 out of 10, I’ve replayed Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide probably like four times. But the great thing about these games is that they’re co op. So you can play them with one or three friends or alone if you want. The combat and the Gore is so awesome in these games. There’s a lot of funny NPCs that you meet. The exploration is really fun, and the stories are pretty decent in both games.
Highly recommend following suit with Dead Island. We have the Dying Light series now, just like Dead Island, you can also play these games with 1 to 3 friends if you so choose. I just want to add that both Dying Light and Dead Island are zombie post apocalyptic games. Now the difference between Dying Light and Dead Island is that Dying Light has a hardcores type of style of traversing, and it’s really cool. Now the story is decent in both Dying Light 1 and 2, and you meet a lot of colorful NPCs along the way.
Another difference I’d like to point out between Dying Light and Dead Island, dying Light has the day to night cycle. It’s really scary outside it night. I’ll just, I’ll let you experience it for yourself. But seriously, play the Dying Light series. They’re great.
Next up, we have days gone. This is also a zombie post apocalypse type game. This one more focuses on like horde control, open world and just kind of exploring. Next up, we have telltales, the Walking dead series. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, telltale knows how to tell a story, and The Walking Dead is their best.
Now, this is more of like, kind of like an immersive story type of game with Qtes and just choice based. So there’s not really gonna be combat, but the stories are good. And be prepared for the story to hurt your feelings. But you can buy the collection and all four games are in it, or you can buy them separately. Highly recommend.
Next step, we have stray. Now, stray is a very short type of game, but you play this cute little orange cat. And the story is actually really good. I don’t want to tell you anymore, so I don’t want to spoil it, but definitely play straight. Next step, we have the Metro series and the Metro series takes place in a post apocalyptic world where like a nuclear war happens. Tourists in the Metro Games are pretty good. Next up, we have Stalkers, Legend of the zone.
Now this is all the games in one. Now I know one of these games take place in the post apocalyptic alternate reality of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. And that sounds super interesting. Next step, we have the state of decay games. Now if you like the zombie post apocalyptic genre, play this.
Next up, we have the gears of war game. Now this is also set in a post apocalyptic world where humans have a conflict with some type of aliens. I’ve heard this game praised time and time again. I’ve heard the Gears of war also has one of the best stories out there, and there’s a new game coming, I think it’s safe to say. Probably add gears of war to your list. Next up, we have Mad Max. So post apocalyptic, we have the horizon series. Now the horizon series is a different kind of post apocalyptic because it’s kind of like futuristic. The world is just so beautiful, you want to get lost in it. And it’s where, like, machines have been reclaiming the earth and they’re kind of like these animals. I don’t know. It’s very cool. Definitely play horizon.
I do have 2 honorable mentions. And I don’t know if you were looking for multiplayer or co op type a deal, but left for dead needs to be mentioned because it’s phenomenal. Also left for dead too, my favorite. This game is very fun to play with friends. It’s also a zombie survival type of game, but you go through like sections where you have to do an objective and then you move on. It’s very fun. Also, its spiritual successor is back for blood. Now again, if you do like zombie games in general, probably play these two games. Back for blood is the same premise of left or dead. You go through like stages and there is a bit of a story to be told, but you run into some crazy type of zombies and it’s really fun to play with friends. But I hope you enjoy the recommendations that I gave you. But if you guys out there feel I left some games off of this post apocalyptic genre list, please let me know in the comments because you guys know I have to add them to my list.
