Magic Regathering Series: Tales from the Pod – Commander Game Recaps and Deck Building Insights

Welcome to tells on the pod, the Magic Regathering series where I’ve talked about the past week of commander games and just general deck building stuff. So let’s jump in the first game I played this week was a 4 pod. I was on Anna Kinarood, Sky Captain versing a Marinoa, a Kimley Mournful Avenger and Zephyr Arcane Blade Master. So this game was the first of first game after Modern Horizon 3 officially came out in AU. And then I dismantled my dogmate deck and turned it into be on a cannery kind of deck. And this one did a lot of work. I’ll be honest, I was really surprised with how big of a threat is deck became quite fast. So I do need to play this one a little bit more carefully because I did put a ultra conscription in this deck. And copying that and with Anna Kenner’s trigger and stuff just made me a big target right out the gate, especially when I had cars that automatically let me put a enchantment from my hand onto battlefield and attach it to creatures. I had it. It was just nasty. But this game was a little bit difficult, obviously, at the Marinoa, who had quite a few board webs in there. Gim gimme just fighting everyone and Zephyr just doing Zephyr things, this combo and storming. So it was an interesting testing ground for Arna Kenrud and I definitely want to keep refining the stack cuz there’s a lot of potential in that deck here.

Our next game I played was of actually 5 pod. So I switched over to set your influx genius and I was versing a Texan dumb champion, Verona Lichqueen, give me monthly adventure again and Akalia the boss this time. So with this deck, at least from my point of view, such a is actually a really cool commander. I think I might have missed built him a little bit because I went for putting in cards that always had something do energy. I think the way to actually play such a is not really, you do need energy, but also you want reaches, have good enter the battlefield and exit the battlefield effects. So we come in, we do something, we die, we do something. So there’s a lot of energy creatures that do synergize with some best stuff. So there’s, I can’t remember name of it, but you cast it, but give you energy. You pay a certain amount of energy to destroy a target permanent with amount of value equal to the amount of energy that you want to spend. So looking for verse kinds of cards, I think I’m gonna kind of shift that deck in that kind of a focus so that Satya create system tokens that have these etvs and exit the battlefield effects as well. So I think that was gonna be interesting cuz you have to balance it with energy as well.

So, but this game was quite an interesting one. A little bit difficult, I would say, because I was doing a lot of work trying to control a field because we’re very not didn’t have a the greatest game. Gimme was kind of getting stuck here and there and Texan was just doing tests and stuff, just combing off. So if you guys have a verse, tetson, watch out for our needs. If a deck is booked, probably it’s really annoying to us. And obviously as college is doing college stuff, you just have to be careful very regardless. And Gimme Morph Avenger. It’s not your typical grow deck when you’re bursting. It is one that kind of leans in fact aristocrats theme. So just keep an eye out when you’re playing these kinds of things, especially with stuff like such. Yeah, when you’re playing energy, it’s not got always gonna be on par with some visa strategy. So you need to kind of think about it a little bit more creatively. And the last game I play last week, I switched over to s last swelling scourge and I was up against a mega of the magic strings and Emma sold elements with I think garyura companion. So it was a Cascade deck, Maren of count plan, Delta and Kali again.

So this one I was surprise prize by how good as lax was, even though I kept trying people, it does not big old dress in there. It’s not gonna be as scary. It was still a scary deck.

I was able to quite a lot with this tiny little signs and spawns. And I didn’t have the almost optimal hand beyond the first one. I only kept my first hand because I had a, I can signal a soul ring and a whole bunch of mana dogs. I had a lot of mana straight up. So I’m like, I’m keeping this one. Probably not the best decision, but it was fun nonetheless.

But with this one, there’s definitely some work I need to do on the mana base. Cuz I really got screwed on a mana base where I provide a lot of artifacts. When my artifacts got removed, I kind of slow down there. So a lot of work to be done on Monebase, but a lot of potential mistake to really do some crazy stuff. So all that stuff, I’d suggest we’ve experienced counters because as likes just builds in spirits kind of so easily.

But with this one, again, I was able to do quite a lot, but I kind of fizzled out because I didn’t have enough card drawing. This one, which kind of was my downpoint also again, be mana base and having my mana rocks destroyed by animal really send me back quite a bit. So really to work on a monebase and some Protection from my moneybasis as well, just to make sure if anything like that happens that I can still come back and not just sit there and wait for stuff to happen to me. So that was all the games that I played this week. So moving on to kind of be our stuff, real drazzy. I know Modern Horizon 3 has come out and there’s a lot of El Drazzi new old Razi decks as well and something that one of my friends told me cuz he actually played in the local store this past weekend on monetization free release as well. He, he was, he usually plays a few deck with Fredo and Sam and he was up against some eldrazzi decks and he said that one of the Eldrazi players was playing zurdock and got really upset, annoyed when his USS Incubator got destroyed. And I understand that, like, but with you need to do what you need to do. Just don’t let them run a Mark. If you run a Mark, yes, not gonna have a good time. And for people playing El Drazzi can’t get upset. If you’re playing adrazzi, it’s like you putting this in your command zone means that you know that you’re going to be a threat. So you need to, if you’re playing those kinds of commanders, just be ready to be the threat and don’t act poorly when people destroy your stuff. You’re more like PSM anything on my end. And I guess that PSA also applies Nadu. I’ve seen a few Nadu players in, one in the store and a couple of them online. And this guy just does a lot of work and he gives you so much advantage, right? It’s basically a kill on site commander unless you want another player to continue playing salt of the rest of the game. So keep an eye on this one as well. So onto my actual deck building. So Koram, I’ve talked with this guy before. I was initially gonna build Deciva relentless or restless. They save a restless, but Crown just keep speaking to me. And because I pull the profile version of him, I’m just gonna build him. And there’s a few different lines I want to go down. I want to spoil too much. I’ll do a deck tech video on it. But basically for a big stuff in a graveyard, reanimate them, make this query bigger, and then fling stuff as well, fight stuff.

That’s kind of a theme I’m going for is he really can be a versatile commander. And I’m just wanna see what I can do with this one. So I’ll be using a lot of the cards from the Precon, but he comes in primarily the glyphs. So I’m keeping the Tom glyph, never go if and the multiple verse of a free Lugo if some keeping. I know two of them coming to precom, but ve Vera is very interesting enough that I wanna keep him sick around for a little bit. Especially never gwyf because he one drop for potentially quite a bit of power. That’s a kind of win, especially if it doesn’t under graveyard, you can just kind of come and do a little bit damage there, be our commander.

But I’m building or rebuilding? I’m rebuilding my is it deck, which was a is it chaos deck held by Ian Malcolm Chaos station, but I’m kind of changing the commander to now be ral monsoon mage. So going down more of a storm route because he makes storms, Bill instance, storm is a lot cheaper. And then when you flip him, he can do a lot of crazy stuff. So I wanna s I wanna try and build it, build a stormy deck. I do have a lot of easy cards, but I always kind of navigate around and remake a lot of easy decks, try make them a little bit different. But I think it’s finally time for me to jump into the storm and build a storm spell spelling, a kind of a deck.

Cuz I didn’t initially have a case and star deck. Cuz my first is a deck, but it was kind of a little bit weak for my liking. So then I switch over to en Malcolm Cast station and now I’m on Ralph Monsoon Mage. So let’s see how long this one sticks around, but it’s definitely something I wanna build. And flashing honor can read up here again, because most recent deck that I built, put together in about an hour and a half with some Kazakh lying around, and it performed well.

So if I put a bit more effort into Anna Kinnerrod, she’s gonna do a lot of work. I just to figure out how the balance between not being too strong at the gate and being able to control the board a little bit as well. So we’ll see what comes out of this one. It’s already got two of the swords in there, sort of half in home and sort of a black and green one, kind of what it’s called. It’s in the face and feminine sort of face and feminine, I think it is. So those are the two that are in at the moment.

I’m not sure. Do you want to pick up a sort of fire and ice all got a really well mistake because it’s not non legendary servant does a lot of work. So when you’re playing this one, just remember there’s a few things you need to keep into in consideration when you’re building on a cannered. The first one is legendary equipment. Birds were just one of them is gonna die if you try and duplicate it. And let’s have a core ATV, a dump buffer.

Secondly, be careful if you’re using stuff like sort of half and harm sort of piston family, etc. Because they have pro Protection from certain colors. And in my deck, I’m running equipments alongside enchantment orders. So if there’s a pro white sort of is a pro white, if I try to duplicate a enchantment on a creature has pro white but birds are just gonna fall off. So just need to be a little bit careful when you’re playing that. So this one does kind of lean a little bit towards figuring out if you wanna do more equipment versus more errors. So I’ll see which if I, if there’s a good balance between the two. Otherwise, I might just go full equipment on. I can read and rebuild Dogmi just to be Horus.

I’m not sure yet, but my first iteration I’m happy with. I’m not sure whether there’s a falcon comes in, but I might put a falcon from Lord Rings in there as well just for flavor. But yeah, that’s it for tells the pot this week. I hope you guys enjoyed.
