The Ultimate Showdown: Determining the Best Defensive Player in the NFL Over the Last 20 Years

Lijah doosable here with my guy cow long.
We’re gonna Crown the best defensive player in the NFL
over the last 20 years. You’re gonna take one half of the bracket,
I’m gonna take the other half,
and then we’re gonna pick a champion together.
You got Troy Palamalu. First,
Ed Reed. Who are you taking to advance?
It’s got to be Ed Reed. I mean,
174 games played, 64 picks,
seven touchdowns off those interceptions.
Next one. This will be interesting one, Kyle. Right?
Because your man that was in the trenches, right?
And both of these players you said gave you headaches.
Aaron Donald versus Luke Keckley.
Both these guys did give me headaches.
I got to play Luke Keckley once down in Carolina,
and I’ll tell you, he gave me a headache.
Not because he hit me hard.
It’s because I could not hit him. Haha.
But look, the guy on the other side of this bracket is Aaron Donald,
man. AD 99,
who some have said
is the best defensive player to ever play the game of football.
Correct. Now let’s go to the other side. Right?
TJ Watt. Ray Lewis.
When you look at TJ Watt versus Ray Lewis.
Ray Lewis, eight time all pro,
right? One time Defensive Player of the year,
two Super Bowl rings. Kyle,
he changed the line back in position.
Ray Lewis, one of the goats.
And to your point, TJ Watt,
fabulous player. Correct.
But at the end of the day,
we’re talking About a career next,
and this one might be the toughest.
JJ Watt versus the Real Reavis.
Oh, man,
Reavis Island. Literally took away half of the field that 0 9 year.
Even though he didn’t win Defensive Player of the year,
he should have won Defensive Player of the year.
When you talk about all the receivers
he held to under 50 yards receiving.
But when you look at JJ Watt,
three time Defensive Player of the year,
I mean, he had double digit sacks
just as last year in Arizona.
He really revolutionized the way that these.
The linemen who are getting blocked are playing the game.
You’re not out of it until the whistle blows.
For sure for Daryl Reeves,
a cultural icon for the NFL.
Because, look,
when you have an opportunity to bet on yourself
and do these one year deals,
and you show up three days before the game,
even the head coach starts practicing, says,
our guys here, Rivas is here.
We’ll go on your side of the bracket first.
Ed Reed versus Aaron Donald.
I’m gonna go recency bias.
I’m gonna go with AD. My side.
JJ Watt versus Ray Lewis. And to me,
I have to give the edge, so Ray Lewis.
I know it’s tough
just because JJ Watt is a three time Defensive Player of the year,
and Ray Lewis only won it one time.
But I think the eight time all pro,
and I think the Super Bowl ring separates them.
But you already know what Aaron Donald was gonna be doing on defense.
Yeah, you have to, uh,
allocate assets to make sure that he is taken care of.
I just know how tough sledding it is
when you’re playing against a defensive lineman
who has outmatched you physically,
mentally, and from an effort standpoint.
I think the three defensive players of the year
give Aaron Donald the edge.
And again, what he meant,
not only in regards to the statistics and what he did in the field,
but how he freed other people up on the defensive line.
Me and Kyle feel that Aaron Donald is the best defensive player
in the NFL in the last 20 years.
But now you get a chance to vote.
Go ahead to head over on NFL on CBS
to cast your vote
and tell us who you feel is the top defensive player
in the last 20 years.
