taking a shot every time my husband hands me a book I haven’t read yet
part 9 (extended cut) – we’re back on Boardroom Cranberry
but I do finally have regular sized shot glasses
courtesy of my friend Melissa
and they’re all book themed
the first one says dogs books
and coffee, the second one says I read banned books
and the third one says there’s no such thing as too many books!
she knows me… the number of people in the comments who regularly remind me
“that’s a double” and I’m like “I know”
that’s rude – how is what…?
I got this in Edinburgh and you know it
but look how pretty it is
very pretty – look
that’s the most gorgeous braid edge I think I’ve ever seen cause
and it matches the cover art
yup
and it’s signed! Is that what gave it away?
that I had a bookmark from the bookstore in the front cover?
yeah – that’s true
but if you’re ever in Edinburgh
check out Golden Hare Books
they had a beautiful kids room in the back
yeah you can do it – starting off strong
hey
Beach Boys is in my head
what Beach Boys song? (Wouldn’t it be nice 🎶)
now that you and I are older
we just act like children all the time though
if marriage doesn’t feel like an endless slumber party with your bestie
it’s not worth it
hey – hi
can I help you? I’m just ogling your beautiful
handsome face – oh
well you gotta cover it
so I can take a look
I gotta cover your face? – no, your face
audiobook – are we counting those?
you will piss off the entire internet if you don’t think audiobooks count
okay I need to know the rules!
audiobooks absolutely count
no get your hand out of the shot so I can talk about the book
it’s people’s favorite part!
Amor Towles also wrote a Gentleman in Moscow
A Gentleman in Moscow was one of my book of the month picks
and I absolutely loved it
my dad’s not a big fiction guy
but he also read a Gentleman in Moscow
and we’ve talked about it
and so he’s watching the show
and he’s dying for me to start watching the show so we can discuss it together
Aunt Jan also loves Amor Towles
she I think
read Rules of Civility first before she got to a Gentleman in Moscow
in the depths of quarantine
she and I started mailing books back and forth to each other
do you remember this? – yeah
so she mailed me this one
the post it says
“not the pretty blue box” referring to book of the month
cause it comes in a blue box
she says “not the pretty blue box
but a fabulous read enjoy”
with a smiley face and a heart
and she signs it “moi”
I would know her writing anywhere
because every book she’s ever given me
if she hasn’t written like
a Merry Christmas message or something inside the front cover
she’ll put a sticky note on it
that’s something grandma used to do for like a birthday or something
she put like Mary’s birthday and the year
yeah – in the front cover
so that I would know like
who I got it from. She said she would mail this to me
but because it was like two days later
than I had it in my brain that I needed to read Rules of Civility
I had already downloaded the audiobook
and then I kept the book… I have to ask if she’s expecting it back
every book that grandma ever gave me
every book that my aunt ever gave me
they always have little… and in fact
Um, my copy of Wind in the Willows is somewhere
she gave me this copy and actually years later
she gave Sophie her copy of Wind in the Willows
cause it was her favorite book as a child
yeah
December 2000 – Aww!
and that’s her writing. I love her – she’s a good auntie.
I f*ing knew it. I bought this three days ago
books a million is having their hardcover sale
and so is Barnes & Noble. I restrained myself
at Barnes & Noble, I did not restrain myself
at books a million and so this was 50% off
I like it – I like it too
and I’m excited to read it
haven’t gotten to it yet… cranberry’s healthy
I don’t think this one’s going so well for me this time…
this one
yes! did I…?
I may have bought this when I was in LA
historical fiction but what does the name of the book suggest?
uh it’s about Pandora’s Box
or Pandora herself – you would think
that’s why it initially intrigued me and why I picked it up off of the shelf
but actually this is set in London and the late 18th century
a mysterious Grecian vase arrives one day
I enjoyed the writing style of this one
but I did read it (sings opening of “Shipping Up to Boston” ☘️)
yes! The Marriage Clock
I picked this up right before the world shutdown
her name is Leila
spelled the same way as our niece Leila!
she’s in her 20s, she’s single
she’s dating and her very traditional parents are like (snap snap)
it’s cute, it’s sweet, I enjoyed it
and I oh
I really remember getting excited about this too
because the author went to Duquesne (du-CANE) “du-KES-nee” for you
not from Pennsylvania… ghoul attacks
Jinn Queen – interesting
yeah it sounds so good
I wanna read it – she needs to read it
I know I do – this one
I told you about this one
actually… I have not read Hell Bent
the second one, I just picked that one up at that second hand shop
where we went with your parents
in upstate New York. Leigh Bardugo is the author who wrote Shadow and Bone
after we watched the first season of Shadow and Bone
I said “oh!
she just started a new series!”
like communes with spirits on behalf of these like
secret societies
and I remember finding it really funny because she’s originally from Los Angeles
in LA everybody wants to stand out – okay
everybody needs to be like um
the most unique most creative
like version of themselves
and every single person in New England
especially in a New England winter
is just in black and peacoats and conformist
and that’s not wrong like – yep
yes. You’re having fun with the Greek retellings bit of the shelf today
aren’t you? But
Jennifer Saint is kind of making her way through
storied female figures in Greek mythology
so she’s got Ariadne, I also have Electra
Atalanta is another one of hers that is also out that I would love
she’s the sister to the Minotaur
and she kinda helps Theseus kill him…
this is another Scotland purchase
I hadn’t realised it had come out in paperback
I had seen it in hardcover
oh that’s the one you were talking about
yes yes
the problem with book shopping in the UK
is that I’ll be damned if I could find a hardcover that was more than 10 pounds
all of them said, you know
9.99 in in UK pounds
which in US dollars is like 12.50
maybe 13 dollars, which is a steal because books in the US are crazy expensive
so I bought a lot of books on that trip that I haven’t gotten to yet
that’s why we packed an extra bag!
I know we still did it
in only carry ons – yep
that’s your other clue – oh
you can see that another Golden Hare
go to Golden Hare Books in Edinburgh
I remember ogling the you know
28 dollar hardcover copy in the
in the States – mmm hmm
You’ll get there – I know
I need to read it and Ava Reid has a new one that I want!
tuck that away in your brain…
I took a picture of it, I’ll text it to you
yeah you gotta send me a picture
um Lady Macbeth just came out
also by Ava Reid… I need it
good job baby
I don’t wanna stand up yet
