Challenges and Solutions in Addressing Over-Tourism in Europe

we need to talk about over Tourism Europe
I’m an American I’ve been traveling for over 10 years
that is not just Americans who are contributing to this
Europe is full of everyone in the summer Australians
Canadians Brits
people from all over Asia
giant tour groups it’s not just Americans
I don’t know why we get the front of this
but over tourism in Europe is a really big problem
and honestly how we solve it is we have to all stop going to the same
like three places
and I hate to blame social media
because social media is my career and I love it
but that’s what happens we see the pretty picture of the place
and then everyone goes there
I went to Hallstatt in Austria once
and I have never been so overwhelmed by this year
volume of tourist in a place
I wanted to get out of there so fast
and halls that is stunningly beautiful
you probably seen it I’ll put a picture up before
but I felt like I was stepping off of like
the beautiful Alpine towns that I’ve been in
where there was nobody or just
you know a few locals and Germans and that kind of thing
and into tourism hell so what you can do as a traveler is I would encourage you
those places that have the million
trillion gazillion views on social media
and it’s like a one photo op kind of situation
that’s not where you need to go
those places are gonna be so crowded and so expensive
if you can put like a modicum of effort to get off the beaten path
I mostly like small towns like the
the Hallstatts and the Cinque Terres of the world
certain islands in Greece where
like if you went one island over or one Italian beach town over
you probably be fine and there are some ways that can support tourism
Paris can support tourism
London can support tourism
the Scottish Highlands that are so spread out
you’re probably fine there
but it’s this thing that happens where you like
little town little place
one Cove one church
one building and it gets overrun
one restaurant in Rome even like Rome
can support tourism
the one restaurant that would blow up on TikTok probably can’t support tourism
so if it already has one good billion views on social media
maybe add something else to your list
