The Five Guys Fries Conundrum: Getting More Bang for Your Buck

This is why you get a load of fries at five guys.
Five guys is notorious for shoveling an ungodly amount of chips
into your bag. Which is fantastic if you’re hungry,
but sadly it’s not just because the server is feeling generous.
It’s actually sometimes comical
how many small strips of fried potato they add.
You can order a small portion
and still get more than you would in a large portion
at other restaurants. Well,
five guys do it because 1.
The extra fries are already factored into the price of the food,
and 2. The customers feel like they’re getting a good deal.
Fair enough. I’m a big fan of that business model.
Even though five guys can be a little pricey,
that tactic works when I’m going home with a bag full of chips.
Founder Jerry Murrell says
it’s much better for customers
to feel that their serving of fries was too large
than too little. Speaking to Food Republic,
he said I teach my managers that if people aren’t complaining
and you’re not giving them enough.
So I guess next time you go to five guys,
you could complain that your extra scoop of fries isn’t enough
and hope for an extra extra scoop. Food for thought.
