Capturing History: The Phenomenal Symbolism in Todd Heisler’s News Photo

This photo is phenomenal. It’s a perfectly done news photo,
and it could potentially go on to be
one of the greatest images ever taken.
I think it’s missing one thing right now that we will get to.
First of all, this is by New York Times photographer Todd Heisler.
Um, and what’s great about it is,
I think as a photojournalist,
when you’re covering a news story,
you want to be able to kind of summarize the,
the vibe and the energy and what’s happening
and encapsulate that into an image.
And if it’s aesthetically a good image,
that’s even another level.
So this is definitely achieved.
Those things, you know,
when you have somebody talking and moving,
it’s hard to get them in a,
in a good, like, pose. Strong,
powerful, but check that box.
It’s perfectly done. And then down here you have, um,
Kamala’s, uh,
great niece. And so that family connection is nice,
but it’s not really necessary
because the symbolism in this photo is this young person,
this young female who’s looking up to,
who could potentially be
the first woman to be president of the United States.
And I think that is the thing that needs to happen
to raise this photo into the pantheon of all time great photos.
Cause if this is, uh,
a young girl looking towards her potential future as the president,
it’s a lot different than being, uh,
looking at someone who was a groundbreaking presidential candidate.
So I think For this image to cross that next threshold,
you know, Kamala needs to win the presidency, so.
But fantastic image, amazing symbolism,
great, um,
color composition. It’s just perfect.
You know, the way that the.
The child is, like,
perfectly outlined and just really pops out from that blue background.
The way that Kamala looks,
you know, powerful and presidential.
Just fantastic stuff. This is what photojournalism,
to me, is all about.
