The Cost of Employee Loyalty: A Personal Reflection on Challenges in the Workplace

We have a company loyalty problem in this country.
My employer just gave me a warning for too many days off this year.
My absences were due to an ectopic pregnancy,
a parent died, my dog had surgery,
and I had a miscarriage. I’m not even a week out having a D and C
and still have a bruise from my IV.
How dare this woman take time off work
to get treated for an ectopic pregnancy,
to attend the funeral of her father,
maybe take a few personal days
to cope with such a huge loss in her life,
having to take her sick animal into the vet
and they ended up needing surgery.
And how dare she go through a miscarriage all in one year!
She’s not even a week out of having a D&C
and her employer pulled her into an office to give her a warning
that if she missed more, she would be at risk of termination.
And yet
these same employers will lay you off with absolutely zero notice,
will say that you’re unprofessional
if you leave without giving an official two week notice.
All the while complaining that they can’t get people to stay
and that people just don’t have a loyalty anymore.
Did you ever. Did you ever ask yourself why?
