Don’t be afraid of smelling a sweaty armpit or a dirty foot.
There’s something in there that’s interesting.
Smell everything.
My name is Sasuke Wilson Brown.
I’m 43 years old, and I run the Institute for art and Old Fashion.
We primarily focus on education,
so making sure that people have access to the knowledge of scent.
We teach perfume making at the core,
training your nose to recognize chemicals.
Most people who come and react with,
oh, gosh,
it’s too much. And then some people really embrace it,
and those are my people.
Working with scent should be a human right.
Perfumerie tends to be the sort of snobby practice.
My interest in scent is always from the perspective of creating access.
And there’s no reason why Los Angeles can’t be a source of inspiration
as much as some beautiful jungle in Marrakesh.
The hardest smells that are conceptual.
An artist once asked
to make the smell of children screaming at midnight.
There’s not really a smell to that.
