Apple has new AI features coming to the iPhone this fall.
And that’s great,
but there’s one thing that would make it better if it were open source.
Apple’s known for bragging about being the privacy company.
More so than Google, more so than Facebook.
They’re the company that is better about protecting your data.
And that may be true here too. Maybe.
I say maybe because there’s no way for us to truly,
truly know how trustworthy their AI tools are
unless they’re open source.
So if you follow this channel,
you probably know that
open source means that anybody can open the hood,
figuratively speaking. Look inside of an app,
look inside of a piece of software,
and see how it works. That’s what open source means.
Unfortunately for us,
apple is not exactly known for making a ton of open source software.
Most of the apps that they make are super closed off.
There is some good here when it comes to user privacy.
So most times
Apple AI will answer questions locally on your device
without using internet. Sometimes it sends questions to apple servers,
other times it sends questions to ChatGPT with your consent.
On top of that, apple will hand select experts
to vet the trustworthiness of its systems
and of its servers. Which is great,
but what would be better is if anybody could do it.
