here’s how I do lawn edge cutting with a standard string trimmer
first I’ll take a weed wacker kinda like this one
and I will flip it upside down
the reason is
I want the string to be rotating perpendicular to the edge I’m cutting
as opposed to parallel with the ground
which is what I would do when I’m clearing out weeds
I’ll hold it so uncomfortable
and the string is pointing down
and I’ll begin to walk backwards
which is more comfortable for me because I can see where the blade is hitting
finally I’ll just back up slowly as I watch the string
cutting a straight line through the edge
parallel with the concrete slab or the garden that I’m trimming
it’s pretty tricky at first
there is a learning curve
but after a few tries you start to get it down
of course the job wouldn’t be done if I didn’t clean everything up
so I’ll pull out this leaf blower and push everything back into the grass
and we’re done
this is maybe one of the most rewarding feelings for me in yard work
is seeing that straight line next to everything else
can’t wait to edge it again
