this past weekend
I saw a movie that is not only one of the biggest surprises of the year for me
but it is also one of the best movies I’ve seen this year period
that movie is called Strange Darling
it just arrived in theaters this Friday
and I cannot recommend enough that you go see it
knowing absolutely as little as possible
this movie is just such a triumphant
smart subversion of horror trope
specifically horror trope surrounding women
it will have you absolutely out of your mind
it stars Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner as our two main characters
you may know Willa Fitzgerald from the Scream TV series and most recently
The Fall of the house of usher
which she should have been Emmy nominated for
and Kyle Gallner is from smile
he was in scream 5 he is a scream king in his own right
these two are some of the brightest stars of their generation
and that is on full feral display here
they are 150,000% going for it
they are so committed particularly will
if it’s good I think this is a star making performance
movie is also just like really well made
it’s got such a clear distinct vision
and it is shot on gorgeous 35 millimeter by Giovanni Ribisi
you can absolutely tell that writer director JT Mallner
had such a clear and distinct idea
with what he wanted to do and how he wanted to do this
sometimes I feel like
the nonlinear storytelling can be a little gimmicky and not make sense
but not in this case it really serves a purpose
it’s really intentional and well thought out
and I think a lot of the subversion and a lot of the themes
really sore because of those choices
I will probably make a more spoiler filled analysis video later
because I’m obsessed with this
but please go check it out
I cannot recommend it enough
it is an original an original horror thriller film
we’re always begging for more original movies
and you have to show up for them
is a smaller movie
so just please give it a shot if you’re into this kind of thing
I gave it four and a half out of five stars
absolutely one of my favorite movies of the year
two of my favorite performances of the year
I cannot get enough of this
