Respecting Authors and the Art of Reading: A BookTok Manifesto

a little hot under the collar
and not just cause I’m having yet another hot flash
readers as an author here on BookTok
I am not here to police you
I don’t care what format you consume your books in
I don’t care where you get them from
as long as you don’t pirate them
like I do care about piracy
cause that’s a dick move so don’t pirate books
I don’t care what genre you read
I don’t care your spice level
I don’t care if you talk about your books in terms of tropes
or if you prefer to do a super in depth literary analysis of the books
but what I do want you to remember is that every book you’ve ever read
is the result of an author
giving hours upon hours of work
of opening up their heart and soul and pouring it onto paper for you to enjoy
creating a work of art because you are a patron of the arts by reading books
it is it is an art form
and you enjoy that art form
and so when you get together with a group of peers to discuss this work of art
and you’re talking about themes
or you’re talking about the plot
or you’re talking about different aspects of the book
remember
that that author is a human being
and you are there to think about their work and not to say
oh my god guys
I googled the author and I couldn’t believe that
who was writing these books Ew
that is also a super dick move
