How do you deal with horrible weather when you’ve booked a portrait photography session? Outside photographers, most people are gonna tell you to reschedule or be sure to have a backup plan. That’s definitely ideal. It’s not always possible. So in that case, what if you just embraced it? Seriously? First of all, newer photographers tend to assume that a sunny day is the best day for taking portraits, and this is actually not the case. Overcast days can be a photographer’s best friend because the clouds give gorgeous, soft, diffuse light that is super flattering, and it keeps you from having to fight with harsh shadows on the face. Next, use props and accessories like umbrellas, rain or snow gear. Literally, you can have a whole weather appropriate session. So get creative. When you embrace the weather and you make it an experience for your clients, they will be excited to purchase and hang those images on their walls because they’re unique, they’re not the same thing everyone else is doing, and there’s a fun story behind it. We can also do close up portraits with the background isn’t ideal. Or we can look for sheltered areas like gazebos or overhangs to keep dry. Your attitude in the session will affect your client’s attitude, so be flexible, be positive.
