Microsoft’s Control Panel Update: A Slow Transition from Legacy to Modern Settings

Please stop panicking. Microsoft didn’t mean it. Recently it was discovered that Microsoft was going to be deprecating Control Panel inside of Windows and instead opting for people to use the settings app. That’s despite the fact that the settings app is way weaker than the Control Panel. If you need anything complicated, you just have to navigate to the Control Panel anyways. But it turns out they didn’t really mean it. They’ve been trying to get people to move away from the panel for a bit, but they’re not ready to completely disable it. So they’ve updated the language on the web page for the Control Panel to let you know it’s safe. Instead of saying it’s being deprecated in favor of the settings app, it now reads that many of the settings are in the process of being migrated to the settings app. The new language reflects the reality of how Microsoft’s really been treating this entire operation. Slowly meandering over most settings to be less useful and not listening to their user base that the way it was was actually helpful. And now it’s practically less useful. It’s been this way since Windows 8, so it appears nothing has really changed at all.
