Sawing Box Elder Logs with Carter: A Saturday Morning Adventure

Here’s a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. My neighbor Carter brought over some Box Elder logs from a tree he cut down, and we’re gonna spend the morning slicing them up. We started out with the shorter crotch sections, and these are kind of fun. There’s some decent crotch figure, and as we go deeper, the box, other flame starts to show up. I thought there would be more flame in these logs since the tree is pretty gnarly. The red color, which is called flame, is caused by stress in the tree while it grows. And being gnarly is pretty stressful. But regardless, there’s some pretty nice material here. Now onto the main trunk. This thing has some pretty goofy shape and was growing in a fence line. So we have some embedded fencing. Pulling back the first cut, we’ve zipped through the fence wire with no problem. I also give Carter a chance to run the saw. It looks like he’s having a pretty good time trying that out. And I think he’s smiling under there, just trying not to screw up. Here’s one of the bigger slabs. Some pretty nice figure and grain with just a dash of flame. So now Carter has a nice stack of slabs to dry and someday make stuff out of. And I have some farm fresh eggs and maple syrup. Having neighbors is great.
