Top Tips for Nailing High School Theater Auditions

Attention, all theater kids. Which of the following photos is the scariest? Audition day terrifying? Well, let me tell you a secret. It doesn’t have to be. Not with the tips I’m about to share. Here’s how you’re gonna nail your high school theater auditions this year and stand out from everyone else. Tip No. 1. Use a very loud and confident speaking voice. If they ask you to introduce yourself and what you’re singing. Please don’t give me this. Stop. Please give me this. Hey there. I’m Lin Boyagi, and I’m going to be singing part of your world. The directors want to cast people who are very confident speaking in front of an audience, so show them that you are. Tip number two. Everyone says this one, and it’s all the more reason to do it. Drink lots of water. The whole week leading up to your audition, drink tons of water. Your vocal cords need hydration to be at their healthiest. Don’t drip yourself of any of that. Things like hydration that are completely in your control, you should use to your advantage. Walk in the most hydrated kid in that room. Tip No. 3. While you’re auditioning, don’t look them in the eye directly. When I film, I look right into my phone camera. When you’re auditioning, you want to be looking right over their heads at the fourth wall, aka the back wall through. But in theater, we say the fourth wall. You don’t want To make direct eye contact, because then that brings your judges into the scene with you. Tip number four. Just some etiquette to watch out for. What does this look like? Do you want to work with that? No. Be watching your body language. None of this. None of this. Just standing still. Open. Your demeanor is how you’re behaving. What is your face look like? Keep a smile on your face during your audition. It really does make a difference. That’s it for today, but I do a whole lot of theater tips on my page, so if you’re interested, go ahead and give me a follow. As always, break a leg.
