This is the difference between multiband compression and dynamic EQ. Multiband compression is pushing the peaks of the music down, where dynamic EQ is turning the frequencies down. So with multiband compression, you’re losing dynamic range, but with dynamic EQ, you’re just moving the sound down, but you’ll still keep the dynamics.
