1992: A Gripping Blend of Action, Drama, and Heist Thrills

There’s a new movie that hit theaters this weekend called 1992. It stars Tyrese Gibson, Ray Liotta, and Scott Eastwood. Yes, son of Clint. I think Tyrese Gibson is a good actor. Sure, I’m not crazy about the fast and furious franchise, but Roman was always one of my more favorite characters. This is a guy who, in 2001, did a solid film with John Singleton called Baby Boy. And this, in a lot of ways, reminds me of the type of film John Singleton would make if he was still with us today. Gibson plays an ex convict who just got out of the slammer six months ago, and he’s trying to rekindle his relationship with his estranged son. And the whole story begins on April 29th, 1992, just hours before the Rodney King trial verdict. But it goes far beyond just that. There’s actually a whole heist film brought into this narrative. It’s a film about father son relationships on both sides of the conflict, but it’s also a heist driven crime thriller. And at certain moments, it becomes an action flick. It’s gritty and intense, but also deep and heartfelt. And Gibson gives a great performance. Sure, a lot of this is presented in a rather formulaic manner, but it doesn’t take away from the engagement that this film offers. It was very easy to connect with the story. if you’re looking for something to go see in a theater this weekend, you definitely have choices. If the New horror film afraid isn’t exactly on your hype radar. Well, go check out this one. It’s a decent mid budget film that often feels like a sampler platter of different genre elements.
