30 is the New Zero: A Critical Analysis of the Educational Policy in DTSB

I was just told by a teacher in a particular school board I don’t want to name names DTSB that 30 is the new zero you should be saying what does that mean Joanna 30 is the new zero is that like orange is the New Black kind of let me explain the new policy in this educational debacle is that a student no matter what their effort or aptitude should get at the minimum 30% so when they jump into credit recovery they can go in for a couple of weeks write a test do an assignment and then get the credit what what on earth are we teaching these students? Well obviously the answer is absolutely nothing and how dare you handcuff brilliant teachers and administrators from ensuring that education’s actually happening in schools it’s the most asinine policy I’ve ever heard so so let me get this straight and you know how I hate that if a student does nothing doesn’t go to class doesn’t hand in an assignment doesn’t do a test they get 30 what is that teaching them? That is teaching them that apathy and that negating all responsibility still gets them something in the end and and then when they do the bare minimum they just get the course and move on have you lost all of your marbles? And then if a student struggles okay if a student struggles they just find windows to pass them along and not actually ensuring they Have the skill set that was required by curriculum and grade level. Again, what are we doing? We are doing such an incredible disservice in that particular school board. I’m sure there’s many like it to the student. In fact, I think there should be lawsuits. I think if they’re not doing their jobs and the government isn’t ensuring they’re doing their jobs and they’re handcuffing teachers so they can’t push the students, negotiate with the students, um, encourage and enlighten students in order to actually be successful individuals. We are building people that will fail again and again and again and again. Either they won’t have the confidence or the skill set to face challenges head on. How dare you? How dare you make that a policy? How dare you pretend as though this is for kids? Because we know what it’s all about, avoiding parents getting angry and saving money. We don’t want to fail them cause we want to push them through. We don’t want them to repeat because it’s costing us money and we’re still gutting the system. How dare you? Do better. And if you can’t do better, stop running the province.
