From Yellow to White: A Renovation Journey Out of the Basement

I’m renovating this old house to move out of my parents basement. And the kitchen is almost done. Quick recap. The original kitchen was way too small for me, so we made it much bigger. There used to be a wall here and now it’s gone. And yes, we made sure it was not a load bearing wall first. And by we I mostly mean my dad. He’s done most of the work, but sometimes I hand him stuff. So I will be taking 50% of the credit for this renovation. Anyway, it probably wasn’t necessary, but he. I mean we put a header in place of the wall just in case. Cause if we’re not doing the most, then what are we doing? But right now it’s more structural and less cute. So we need to change that to the Home Depot so dad can tell me yet again how much cheaper all this wood used to be. Silly dad, it’s 2024. It cost money to breathe. You gotta get with it. Anyway, he’s gonna frame out the header to make it look more like a beam. And in the meantime I attempted to sand the floors. He were attempted because it did not go so well. It was the most traumatizing 16 hours of my life and I definitely need to see a therapist about it. But I don’t have money for that right now because I spent all of my money hiring someone else to do the rest. Of the floor that was not in original budget. But let me tell you, I do it again in a heartbeat. Look, I’m all for doing things yourself, or making your dad do everything for you, but refinishing floors is not worth any amount of money that you may think you’re saving by not hiring out. Sanding down just the kitchen probably took 5 to 10 years off my life. I can’t even imagine what the rest of the house would do to my lifespan. If I’m gonna pay someone to do something I wanted to be the. And in the flooring industry, that’s someone who invests a butt ton of money in their equipment. And someone who doesn’t hire employees, because no one will get the job done like they will. And sure, they are probably gonna be more expensive, but that’s because they know their worth. I respect that. And I respect small business. And this is worth every penny. Cause he sanded our floors perfectly flat, which the machines you could rent could never. Let’s all just take a moment to admire the freshly sanded White Oak floors. And now they’re gone. Because I decided to have them staying. The light wood look is cute, but it’s definitely a trend. And I don’t have the money to refinish them again. When big interior design decides out in five years. We all remember what happened with the gray floor epidemic. Of the 2,000 tens. So I went with provincial Because it’s timeless. And you really can’t go wrong with Medium Brown. Look how beautiful. Gorgeous. There’s absolutely no way I would have been able to do this good of a job. Listen, I’m a nosy neighbor, and I do like to go to open houses for no reason other than to snoop. And it is very apparent when the floors have been refinished by someone other than a professional. So don’t DIY your own floors, because I can promise you there will be zero return on your investment. Even if they look halfway decent. It’s not worth the pain and suffering. And if you still think I’m wrong first, I’m not. And this man was in and out in less than a week. How long did it take you? Uh huh. I rest my case. By the way, a few weeks ago, I asked you all what paint color I should go with. Off White or Off White. There was an overwhelming amount of votes for Off White. And because I am one of the people, I listen. This is White Dove by Benjamin Moore. And if you think that’s boring, then maybe you should have suggested a better color. Then go ahead. I’m listening. Yeah, that’s what I thought. This whole house used to be yellow. And when I say the whole house, I mean everything. It starts to infiltrate your brain after a while. I need to clean slate, and I’m painting everything white. Sue me. Oh, Yeah, and our countertops came in, but you are gonna have to wait to the end of the video to see those up close and personal because we are still mid DIY and like to say to my brain, it’s a mess in here. But we are at the final push, which means I have to finish what dad started and stain this. Phoebe, I honestly put this off because standing upside down is as awful as it looks. So was wood filling, pre conditioning, staining, and last but not least, ceiling. Turns out doing anything upside down all sucks. But now that that’s all done, dad can finally install the light fixtures, which I bought over a year ago. So now I’m just hoping that they look good. And can’t forget about the jewelry. I decided to go with handle. So we had a lot of holes to drill. And because I threatened dad so many times to not mess up, he made a jig for his hardware jig so he could drill the holes in the exact same spot every time. Thank god for his big fat brain cause he nailed it. Now are you ready to see it all come together? But you gotta promise not to judge cause I still got some sparkle and some shine to add you. Pinky promise. Okay, fine. I’ll show you. We officially have a usable kitchen. Wow. Now you are gonna notice some things are unfinished. Like we still need To cover the duct over the microwave. And we still don’t have a backsplash. We also don’t have any chairs at the kitchen table, and I wanna put some shells up at the coffee bar. But what we do have is a kitchen I can cook in, hypothetically, because I don’t really do that, but I definitely can heat something up in the microwave. And not to brag, but I make a mean cereal. The ratio is truly an art. And someone please tell me how much they love these countertops. I don’t know if that’s my favorite part or this beautiful mood lighting. If you have any other suggestions of things I should add, let me know. In the meantime, let’s take a look back at how far we’ve come. And I believe the world is burning to the ground. Oh, well, I guess we’re gonna find out.
