Exploring Individual Linguistic Awareness and the Value of Linguistic Experience

I have Covid so this video will just have sound but I wanna talk about individual linguistic awareness and using this comment as a springboard with no criticism involved just as a way to open the door to talking about the role of individual linguistic experience and awareness in how we evaluate both the world and how people talk about language an individual speakers experience of language is valid and valuable but it is not statistically significant you see an individual speaker in middle age will have generously talked to 10,000 people in their life and depending on where they live that makes up a fraction of the entire population if you take someone from the state of Rhode Island for example which is a million people in it approximately that 10,000 people is 1% of the state’s population so a speaker can extrapolate to how people do speak in Rhode Island because they have a lot of experience with that but they cannot then say well nobody speaks like this furthermore linguistic awareness is divided into two categories explicit and implicit explicit awareness is the stuff that we know that we know and implicit awareness is the stuff that we know but we don’t know that we know implicit language awareness is far greater than explicit basically there’s a whole bunch of stuff in our hand that we don’t know that we know and that we don’t recognize that we use all of us this is how you often get people from other places and other languages say huh you guys talk like this or you say it this way and the people they’re describing will not have noticed that particular feature about themselves before the wrap up all English is good English all language is good language really and if somebody says it somewhere in your region then it’s part of your regional language PS lots of different things can coexist linguistically such as people who know all the names for different chili peppers and those who use the word jalapeno to refer to banana peppers it’s all good baby doll P P s please evaluate your rejection of claims about languages for non linguistic influences okay bye
