Witches of Munchkinland: The Behind-the-Scenes Drama of The Wizard of Oz

Why wasn’t there a stunt double for Margaret Hamilton, the actress who played the Wicked Witch of the west in The Wizard of Oz, when she was burned on the set of Munchkinland from poorly timed pyrotechnics? She absolutely had a stunt double. Her name was Betty Danko. She did not, however, perform the stunt of the Wicked Witch of the west disappearing from Munchkinland, because that comes right after the Wicked Witch of the west’s line, I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too, which feeds right into that movement. So in order to make it fluid, they wanted Margaret Hamilton to go right into it. But that doesn’t mean poor Betty Danko was spared during the Munchkinland scene either. Because while she didn’t do the disappearing from Munchkinland, she did the appearing in Munchkinland, springing up from that trap door like a Jack in the box. Now, there was an aluminum roof over where the trap door was. The dance director, Bobby Connolly, was in the middle of telling the munchkin performers how not to fall in the trap door when he did. What? Fell in the trap door while Betty Danko was standing down there waiting to make her entrance. Bobby Connolly and the piece of metal fell right onto Betty Danko’s head and shoulders, knocking them all out of whack. And she had to see a chiropractor. She stated that she could barely lift her arms high enough to drive her car. As we Know, this was not the worst injury that Betty Danko suffered on the set of The Wizard of Oz. But neither of these witches escaped Munchkinland unscathed.
