Terminator Zero: A Fresh Take on the Franchise with Timothy Oliphant as the Lead

Terminator Zero fundamentally understands what people want out of this franchise, and that’s to see Timothy Oliphant play a Terminator. And also to get away from what the movies keep trying to do, keep trying to tie the mythology back to Sarah and John Connor. This is just completely different story. We see different characters who have a hand to play in Judgment Day and how their actions will impact the future. As much as the series takes place in 1997, right before Judgment Day, following Malcolm Lee, he’s the scientist trying to create an alternative AI to Skynet called Kokoro that hopefully can try to combat it and convince it that humanity is worth saving, that it shouldn’t destroy humanity. Those are some of my favorite parts of the series. Just Malcolm talking to Coco. Like, the action is great. It’s beautifully animated, gory as hell. Like, that shouldn’t come as a surprise, it actually has. Like, it’s a very thoughtful TV show, and it’s really scary in a way that it could only be in 2024, since much of the action does take place in 1997. You have these discussions about whether humanity should pursue AI, even though the AI we have today is just machine learning. It’s not actually artificially intelligent, but just how. There are these points in human history where we could have done something else, we could have gone a different route, saved a ton of lives, if we had just been A little bit more thoughtful with technology, but we just have what we have. And if you’re a fan of the Terminator franchise, this is an installment that actually enhances the mythology rather than muddy the waters.
