Understanding the Difference Between ‘Te Logo’ and ‘Te Ja’ in Portuguese Greetings

I’ve had many students ask me, what is the difference between a Te logo and a Te Ja? So they are both greetings that we say when we are leaving or when someone else is leaving. But a tchau is when we leave, generally for a longer time. We know we’re gonna see the other person, uh, later in the day. Imagine it’s morning now, and I know I’m gonna see them later in the day, but they will be gone for quite some time. Then I’ll say a Tae log. Sometimes we also use a Tae log when we are leaving, and it’s just like a general greeting. Instead of saying a diosh, we will say a telogo even if we’re not coming back that same day. For example, when you’re at a bakery or at a restaurant and you know the person, like, you’re gonna say telogo when you leave. And Atejia we use when we know that the other person, or that we, if we are the ones leaving, are not gonna be gone for very long. So imagine you are gone for one or two hours, but you know you’re gonna come back, or even 5 or 10 minutes. Then you can say ate ja. So there’s a difference in the length of time that one will be absent.
