Navigating New Grad Nursing Job Offers in New York: An Update on My Journey

I graduated nursing school with the 3.8 GPA, and I’ve been posting about my journey of finding new jobs as a new grad in New York City, technically New York State. I came here and told you all that it is not as easy as everybody makes it out to seem, and I was not lying. It hasn’t been. But I’m gonna give you guys update on some of the jobs that I went to and the interviews and if I got offers and all that. So if you have been following me, you guys know I was applying to a psych position, where I went for the interview, then I got called to take an exam for the job, and then I had to go in for remediation because I actually got 100 on one of the tests. But then one of the tests before the job, I didn’t do so well, so I had to do those questions. It was a whole process. Okay. A lot of people have been asking me if I got the job, and the answer is, y’all, I did get that job. But before y’all get excited, I actually turned down my job offer. I know what y’all about to say. Why did you do that? And. But honestly, because I had to weigh the cost and the benefits of that job. To be completely transparent, there was a conflict of interest with somebody that I know working at that job. So I originally was A little weary about taking it. But the other thing that I do wanna mention is that when they offered me, like, the job payment, the offer that they gave me was not even touching six figures. So that was already kind of a big flag for me, because a lot of the jobs that I have been applying to touch at least six figures in New York State. And this was a hospital job, too. It wasn’t outpatient. So that was a little weird to me. But between my BSN differentials and I think another differential I would have gotten, it did end up coming up to six figures, but it still just wasn’t enough. That wasn’t the only thing. I just didn’t feel comfortable with taking that job. Like, my intuition was just telling me no. So I did not accept that offer. And that was actually a little stressful to me, because I was very adamant about getting the job. I was talking to the manager, like, it was really stressful, telling them that I no longer wanted to accept the offer. And I was really discouraged about that, because, as you guys know, I haven’t been working yet as a nurse, and I’ve been applying to jobs, and it’s been hard getting interviews. So I was like, should I really take this next step? But I decided to do it because that just seemed like the right thing to do. Now, I actually had two other interviews. For two other site jobs at two separate hospitals after that. And one thing about me, y’all, and I feel like I need to give y’all interview tips, is anytime I make it to the interview, I always get the job offer. So far, there has not been a job that I went to an interview for, that I did not get a job offer for. So right now, there is one hospital that I got an interview for, and I literally got my offer the same day for that hospital. It’s for a psych position, three days a week, and it’s a day shift, which a lot of people like, but I don’t really care about having day or night shift. Think about that job. It’s seven to seven, three days a week, and it’s in a very known hospital. The pay is also at least six figures. And I’m gonna get about two differentials for that job. For the other job, it is at a psych hospital. It’s also a psych position. For this job, it is a swing shift, so that time is from 10:00am to 11, which they would actually give me a differential for. And despite popular belief, I actually like that shift because 10:00am is not too early to wake up for work. And then if I get off of work at 11 p M, I still have, like, the night to go out. Cause when me and my friends go out, we don’t Leave till 12. And I honestly really liked my experience there when I was interviewing, and I like the manager as well. The only thing is, for that job, the manager is currently on vacation, so I haven’t gotten my exact offer letter yet, but I have spoken to HR and they want me to come to HR, appointments, etcetera. Right now, y’all, I’m literally trying to decide between these two jobs. I’ve been talking to my parents, I’ve been talking to my friends, and I’m just trying to see which one works better for me. I won’t tell you which one I’m leaning towards yet, but which one do y’all think I should take? And that is the update of my new grad nursing journey. Bye, babes.
