Confusion and Cards: A Hard Photo Journey

Day 244 of trying to take a hard photo every single day all year. So my camera for today was my Canon Power Shot. I realized that I haven’t really made it clear exactly what I think the quote unquote pillars of a hard photo are. So as subjects you have smoking, drinking, gambling. And as themes you can have what I call the three C’s of a hard photo. Contradiction. Where things that are in the photo are opposites, but you somehow make it look natural that they’re together. Confusion. Pretty straightforward. And 3 contrast. Maybe it’s not complete opposites, but there are things that you just wouldn’t expect to see together. And for today, I had the perfect thing for confusion. I found this card. I have no clue what it is or who Darla is, but it’s a card. So let’s do something with gambling. I set up a fake poker game on my table. It’s like a five card draw poker game. I usually like Texas Hold’em, that’s where I make the most money. But for this idea, five card draw works the best. What’s great is that Darla is the same size as my bicycle card, so it fits perfectly. I set the power saw on a tripod and just pointed it down at my cards. I took a few photos, ended up liking the one with flash the most, so started editing that one in Lightroom. I gave it a very simplistic grade, but To ensure that you could see the details on Darla’s card, I just made a simple mask and altered the lighting and a bit of the textures just so it was easier to see the detail. And with that, this is my hard photo for the day. Let me know what you guys think down in the comments below, and I will see you all tomorrow.
