The Pros and Cons of Curved vs Flat Smartphone Designs: A Comparative Analysis

The reason that most smartphones nowadays, just flat pieces of glass and metal are not curved is because curved phones are worse. So here I have last year’s S23 Ultra, an absolutely beautiful smartphone with a slight curve on the edge of the glass. And this is the S24 Ultra, the current model with basically a completely flat display and more flat edges. Now personally, I think the S23 Ultra actually feels better in the hand because the curves do kind of help ergonomically. But any curved aspect of smartphone designs, especially if it’s in the glass portions, is terrible durability. As an example, when apple switched from the curved iPhones with the 11 series to the 12 series with completely flat glass panels and especially flat sides, the durability just went through the roof because for a curved smartphone, if you happen to drop it onto the side, it would still probably hit the display cause the display would actually curve over the edge, thereby completely shattering the display. But if a more flat smartphone was to ever drop at an awkward angle, the screen would most likely be completely fine because the screen would actually never make contact with the ground.
