Analyzing Character Development and Disappointing Endings in ‘Barbie: A Fairy Secret’

if I could change one thing about Barbie a fairy secret it would be the very end where the movie takes back all of its character development and has a side character completely erase the memory of all three of our protagonists for a movie that is so dependent on character development for its overarching theme like the lesson that they’re trying to teach it’s so jarring that they would put forth all this effort to show you that Raquelle has changed and that it was all a big misunderstanding and that “forgiveness can help you fly” just like the tagline says only for them to completely negate it at the very end be a Fairy Secret is a movie about Barbie finding out there’s a secret fairy world but it’s also a movie about Raquelle it’s a movie about frenemies healing their relationship and coming out the other side with mutual understanding and then at the very end they take all of it back to reestablish the status quo also that they can I assume continue setting Barbie movies in the real world where Barbie is a real person without any major changes to the status quo course of one movie Raquelle goes from ripping Barbie’s dress on the red carpet to trusting Barbie and Barbie trusting her like they save the world and at the end of the day how are they rewarded Princess Graciella completely wipes their memory in the movie it’s kind of frames like oh Raquelle would have told the secret she can’t keep the furry secret but this whole movie we have been establishing how she’s capable of learning so why am I seeing Princess Garciella give her exactly zero chances to not rat and then Barbie and Raquelle both wake up and they’re like I had a strange feeling that we made up that’s weird we would never do that hahaha so not only does Barbie lose the friend that she made during this movie but she also loses two of her casual friends slash styluses because they go back to the fairy world and it’s just very dissatisfying
