The FedEx Cup Playoffs: A Dud Conclusion and the Need for Bold Changes

FedEx Cup playoffs, PGA Tour season, Tour Championship are now over. And, uh, I. Man, it was just a bit of a dud. It was a bit of a dud. I want to start by saying that this is the appropriate result. Like, Scotty’s been the best player all year. This is obviously not taking anything away from Scotty. 62 million in earnings this year, won like seven times, eight times, whatever you want to call it. He’s been the best player this year. Fitting to see him win. That being said, Sunday was a snooze, a big time snooze. Scotty had a lead, it got a little bit close, and then it was over in a heartbeat. As I’ve said before, also like the PJ Tour, it’s. This a tough scenario for them. The majors are already over. They don’t own any of them. You’ve got August, right? It’s a tough time period. Baseball is heating up, football is starting up. The. The sports watching public is very distracted. It’s not like they’re gonna wave their hands and. And have a. A miracle and all of a sudden we’ll have a Masters or another Ryder Cup in August. Like, it’s tough, but you just can’t have the end of the season end with such a whimper like that. Like, if you’re gonna do the weird thing where you have the starting strokes and you have the handicap, like, the whole point of that is, like, it’s gotta be close or They’re trying to make it exciting. It. It just wasn’t exciting, like, at all. Like, Scotty winning, um, kind of masks over, like, just how kind of random and. And out of touch. The FedEx Cup standings are the final ones with the whole rest of the year. I mean, look at this. Is. This is it right here. The. The top, whatever. It was seven finishers. Only Scotty and Xander won a single tournament. So it’s not determining who’s played the best season long. And it’s not an entertaining show in and of itself. The week of East Lake. So what is it doing? They’re just playing for money. It’s like there’s no. There’s no soul, there’s no buzz, there’s no excitement. And also, the new East Lake looks like way more fun to play. I was out there earlier in the week with the Creator Classic, and it. The restoration looks great. The course did not play difficult at all. And the talk was, oh, the greens need to settle in. They’re too firm. It’s gonna be too firm. They didn’t really struggle. There was no wind, it was hot, all of this stuff. But, like, when you take out a bunch of trees, these guys are so damn good. They’re going to find a way to make par from off the Fairway, especially when you give them, like, Fairway shots around the green. And I understand, like, there’s a push and a pull between. You want the course to Be to look good and be fun to play every single day. But also it’s gotta. It’s gotta challenge the pros. This would have been the leaderboard without the. The starting strokes. Basically the gross division. I mean, 22 under at East Lake. That was not happening before. You got three guys at 20 under. You’ve got 11 guys at 13 under or better. There’s only 30 guys in the field. A full third of the field was 13 under, a better. And I get it, they’re the best players, but all of this to say this was a dud. This was a dud. And. And hopefully Strategic Sports Group, which, you know, invested billions of dollars in. Sorry, I’m fussing with a new puppy here. She’s biting my hands. It’s a little. It’s a little chaotic, but hopefully they’ve got big plans, cause we haven’t seen him yet. The 2025 season just came out the. The schedule, and it’s the exact same. Same. Three FedEx Cup playoff events, one in Memphis. Next year it’s going to Philly, back to East Lake. I really do think they need to start from scratch with the FedEx Cup playoffs, or at least with East Lake. Like, something’s got to change. Let’s have some. Some bold ideas. Let’s do something different. Because, like, a situation like this where you’ve got a guy 30 under par, waltzing to victory with a bunch of guys in second and third who haven’t won all year, I’ll be shocked if The ratings are decent
