Film Favorites from August: Folk Horror, Vampires, and Emotional Roller Coasters

I have been watching a movie every single day of 2024 and wanted to share my favorite first time watches of August 1st up, if you like folk horror or vampire movies you gotta check out The Vourdalak it had a beautiful film aesthetic and had a really creative and strange use of puppetry The Peanut Butter Solution was an absolutely bizarre kids movie that had me both laughing with it and at it this movie has everything: child neglect, kidnappings, being haunted, and a kid’s pubes growing so long they start coming out of his pants I got to see Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds in theaters and had an exhilarating time it was a cute story told really artfully with lots of great themes packed in City of the Living Dead was weird, gory and wild and is probably my new favorite Lucio Fulci movie there’s a scene where over 20 pounds of maggots are thrown on our protagonists and I was both disgusted and smiling Bay of Blood was a really fun Italo horror slasher it is a movie that does not give a fuck from the beginning to the very jaw dropping end The Living Dead Girl was 100% my kind of shit queer odd lewd and gory it is a unique zombie vampire lesbian tale with amazing atmosphere I Have Something To Get Off My Chest is a beautiful short film about top surgery and recovery it was intimate, emotional and left me crying Tough Guys Don’t Dance is a strange, *strange* drama with elements of noir art house and genuine so-bad-it’s-good glory there are so many weird lines of dialogue and so many twists it’s just an emotional roller coaster so yeah, check out these great movies if you haven’t already and I would love to hear some of your favorite first time watches of August in the comments!
