Navigating Identity: Why American Isn’t as Simple as It Seems

I’m from America. Hmm. Problem. That sentence can be offensive, but it shouldn’t. Let me explain. America is a continent with many different countries, and the people from these countries are also Americans. So when people from the USA refer to themselves as Americans, it can be annoying for the rest of Americans. Think about it. Saying I am American is as if a French person would say I am European, meaning that he’s from France. But here’s the thing. This country is actually called United States of America. Yes, the word America is part of the name of the country, and it’s the only one that has the word America in its name. Another reason why saying I am America might make sense is that someone from Montenegro is a Montenegrin. A person from Honduras is Honduran. But there is no word for people from the United States of America. So what should they say?
