Navigating Song Requests: A Guide for Worship Leaders and Music Directors

Hey, have you heard this song? We should do this song at church. Song request how do you deal with constant song requests? One of the first questions I ask is what do you like about the song? Tell me, what do you like? Often times a person likes the production or the singer or a million different things other than the lyric. And the theology of the lyric resonates with them in a deep way. And sometimes it’s good just to hear why they like it. The second question I always ask is the more important question, and it is, why do you think that song would be good for our church? Tell me about that. More times than not, they cannot tell you why they think it would be good for the church. But as the worship leader, as the music director of your church, you’re in charge of the diet. You and the pastor are in charge of the diet of what people sing and what they say and how they form belief through the lyric that we sing over and over again. It’s important that we don’t just willy nilly say yes to everybody’s song request, cause oftentimes people are just saying, hey, I like this thing on my own, in my car, on the radio. It feels good to me individually, and that doesn’t mean it’s going to be good for the whole church. What do you like about the song and why do you Think the song would be helpful for our church?
