The Deceptive Beginnings of Nvidia: Unveiling the Geforce 2:56 – The World’s First GPU at 25 Years Old

The world’s first GPU is now turning 25 years old. And wait until you hear about how Nvidia was shady even back then. This is the Nvidia Geforce 2:56 and it’s actually marketed as the world’s first GPU. This launched in 1999, but it’s. It wasn’t the first ever desktop graphics card. There were actually several companies back then making graphics cards, including the legendary ATI. But in 1999 Nvidia just basically decided to change is the naming scheme from graphics card to GPU. The reasoning is because they move some of the transform and lighting processing directly onto the processor on the card. This processing used to be on the CPU. It makes sense, but it’s still kind of funny that even 25 years ago envy was trying to pull a fast one in their marketing. Some things just never change. I actually found a Youtuber that tested some gaming with the Geforce 2:56 seven years ago. I don’t think these graphics aren’t looking that terrible. I vividly remember PC gaming back in 1999. I was 8 years old, but that was a much simpler time.
