So you’ve heard, the UK is partially suspending weapons it sends to Israel. What does this mean? The government is suspending 30 out of the current 350 licenses to export weapons to Israel. This will include shipments of things like parts for fighter jets, helicopters and drones. The reason is that the UK government has finally admitted there’s a clear risk that these weapons are being used, use to violate international law, something that the entire world has known for a while. But it’s significant for the UK to admit it because they’re a really influential country and they’re one of Israel’s closest allies. So obviously this is a good start and important progress, but it doesn’t go far enough. Specifically surrounding F35 jets, a type of jet that has been confirmed by the Israeli military to have been used in an attack on a humanitarian zone. Humanitarian zone? The thing with these jets is that the UK won’t send parts directly to Israel, but they will send their parts to the US. Or companies like Lockheed Martin, put them into F35 fighter jets, and then send them to Israel. So it’s just, like, through the Grapevine. And this has been getting a lot of criticism, right? Especially from folks calling for a full arms embargo, which would be stopping sending all of the weapons instead of just some of them. Since the Labor Party in the UK took power in July, this is the third time they’ve switched the Approach to Palestine versus, like the last government. First, they resumed funding to UNRWA. Second, they got rid of the plans to challenge the arrest warrant for Netanyahu that the ICC put out. And now they’re doing this. Partial suspend. That all being said, it’s very worth noting that labor says it has not changed its position on supporting Israel security, which it describes as a solid and unyielding. They are still the UK, right? They still intend to be an ally to Israel. I’m in support of a full arms embargo. Our politicians can say cease fire all they want, but if they continue sending billions of dollars of weapons to Israel, it’s not gonna happen. I’m American and 69% of Israel’s weapons come from the US. That’s why I signed and I’m spreading the not another bomb petition aimed at the US government and acting in arms embargo.
