The NFL and NBA have more overlap than you might realize. Take a look at this play from the Pacers. Nemhard is playing quarterback while we have a three receiver set ready to run routes, and as knee Smith runs the slant he gets open for a clean look that unfortunately comes up short. Or what about this play from the Raptors? The receivers again are lined up against the corners and safeties, and as Gary Trent Jr. Runs the end around, just like in the NFL, he’s able to get penetration which leads to a putback dunk. Or what about that time LeBron James and Anthony Davis played offensive line for Austin Reeves? Darius Garland here is trying to sack the quarterback, but he’s not really the prototypical pass rusher while LeBron and AD give their quarterback a few seconds in the pocket. You also can’t forget about Nikola Jokic and all the deep bombs he throws to his receivers, which even has his teammates acknowledging his touchdown passes. And of course, above all else, you can’t forget about Isaiah Stewart and him going full Miles Garrett mode running through his entire team. Next time someone tells you no NBA player can play in the NFL, show them this clip. Because at the minimum I can count on Stewart to stop a C gap.
