The Transition to USB C: Apple’s Strategic Shift Towards All USB C Ports

Just like with the headphone Jack, get ready for apple to kill off a port you use all the time. At least they’re not replacing it with Lightning this time. Apple was actually one of the first companies to adopt USB C, all the way back in 2015 with their 12 inch MacBook. And since then they’ve basically made it the standard port on their laptops. But they kept the regular USB A on their desktops like the Mac Mini Studio and imac. But that appears to to be changed with the launch of the M4 Mac mini. It’s expected to lose USB A ports altogether and be a completely USB C based computer. Obviously you can still use dongles just like you can with a lightning to aux adapter. But Apple’s not even the first company to dream this up. We showed off at Computex earlier this year that Asrock’s next gen flagship Intel motherboard will feature eight USB C ports with two extra Thunderbolt ports. So even in making things harder for the customer, they’re still not first. But hey, when you’re charging $19 for an adapter just to use a port, swapping to all USB C is definitely a money printing move for apple.
