question is for Kathryn this is question that I’ve received a lot too why should young people and young workers think about Social Security well thank you for that um I will start by saying that I’m Kathryn I am a white woman with lots of freckles bright red lipstick and long brown hair that is almost always messy uh and I’m wearing a black dress so ah young people you know so many people in this room represent groups of Americans whose lives and livelihoods have been altered by Social Security there’s no need to convince them that Social Security is important there’s need to galvanize their action into making it even better but there are a group of people with that special kind of youthful confidence you know they’ll never become disabled they’ll never lose their job they know how to save and you know what Social Security won’t be there for them anyway and if you gave them their tax dollars they could investment and make a higher return that that’s a almost a from my perspective shockingly common point of view that you know to me comes off as slightly arrogant but I won’t we don’t need to delve into that part when I when I speak to people that have that point of view I I try to place for them Social Security’s role in their life as an ensure that they don’t have to be so if you were to take a hypothetical that Social Security benefits just turned off tomorrow which is obviously a hypothetical you know yes there would be lots of elderly Americans who would lose income but we don’t expect them to go out and get a job we’re not expecting them to go out and pull themselves up by their bootstraps if an 85 year old woman lost her Social Security benefit she would call her family she would call her children she would call her grandchildren and it would be on families to make up the difference if Social Security failed to deliver the federal government will transfer over a trillion dollars to Social Security beneficiers that year and that is a massive Bill to put at the doorstep of young Americans how many people that you are related to are receiving Social Security can you finance all of their living all of their medical expenses all of their food and transportation independently I recognize that perhaps you are savvy at investment that you think you can save but that’s a lot harder to do if your parents were supporting your grandchildren and couldn’t help you pay for college or help you buy a house it would be a lot harder to do if you yourself were supporting multiple people who were retired Social Security deals in cash but its primary purpose is risk neutralizing risk that would be far too difficult for any one American to bear on their own risk is expensive just ask the federal government but it is a risk that we benefit from having neutralized and what I try to express to young people is that if a benefit is so important and so effective at his job that you can’t even envision a world without it that’s how you know that you need it
