Parenting Survival Guide: Navigating the Minecraft Maze with Kids

Okay, parents, I don’t know how I did it, but I have a 20 year old and a 17 year old and I escaped ever having to play Minecraft with them. I literally never picked up any sort of game or controller to play that game with them, ever. And I thought I was out of the woods. And now my 10 year old, and this has been going on for a little while, but my 10 year old now wants me to play this Minecraft, right? So I’ve tried. I tried a few times like a year ago, maybe to maybe it was during the pandemic, I tried because I was like, you know what, we’re locked in. He probably just needs to spend some time with me or whatever. And then the next thing I know, it’s nighttime and there’s zombies and I’m dead and he takes all my stuff and I didn’t even know that we were playing yet. And now I am trying it again. And I thought, well, we’ll do it on the iPad. Maybe it’ll be easier to control or whatever. And he’s just like, dad, where are you? And all I see is brown, right? Like it’s just brown on the screen. And I’m like, I don’t know where I am. Where are you? And he goes, I’m right here. Look. And I’m like, all I can see, Everett, is brown. That is it. That’s because you’re looking down and you’re squatted. And I’m like, how would I ever know that I’m in the squatting position or that I’m looking down? And then apparently then I just drown all the time because I don’t know how to get out of the water. So I hate it.
