From Beginner to Competitor: My Journey in Hockey Skills Development

This is what a three month hockey player looks like trying to escape full speed with the puck. Now as you can see, I wasn’t very good, but this is what I look like now seven months later. I think it’s safe to say I’ve made some improvement. And people are always asking me now, what did I do to get better? Well, this right here is the No. 1 thing. I practice to become a decent occupy player. Oh, okay. Not actually. Michigan is pretty easy once you understand it. But what’s not so easy is the skating required to play hockey. It really is like playing two sports in one. I think that’s what makes it so much fun, but also really difficult.

I think I owned a pair of roller blades as a kid, although I don’t really even remember them. When I bought my first hockey stick in August, all I could do was skate straight. I didn’t know how to transition. I couldn’t skate backwards to save my life. And crossovers weren’t even in the question.

Glad, here we are now. Skating wise, I’ve still got things I’m working on like Mohawk and improving my backwards crossovers. But stick healing wise, this is where I need to improve. I’m trying to get better at triangles and taking defenders on, but on honestly, I feel like my biggest issue most of the time is simply that I don’t know what to do, especially in a one on one. I finally feel like my feet can keep up with my hands a bit better. Now I’ve gotta sit down and learn some different moves. So if you’ve got any advice from me, then drop it down the comments.
