Enhancing Portrait Drawing: Adding Depth and Detail to Short Hair

Improve this drawing submitted by o, who says, please fix the hair and do what you gotta do. Well, short hair like this is one of the hardest to draw. Anything important to add this deeper shadow, to add more depth. And I’d also add more shadows to the sides of the head. And I’d also do the same to the size of the face. And with references like this, it’s easy to think that there are no lights in shadow, but the light is coming from the flashlight of the camera. So everything that is facing us will be in light, while the size that are not facing us will be in shadow. And because this is a front view, when you draw the center line, typically there needs to be same space between each eye. So I would just grab this side and move it to the right so they have the same space. I would also add more volume to the eyebrow and the eyelashes, increase the size of the Iris and also show a bit less in the gaps of the e. And if you go from the tear duct down in this reference, it hits the wing of the nose while in yours it doesn’t. So I’ll make the nose slightly bigger so it matches. And notice how you kept this line straight. I would just create a slight corner right here to capture the cheekbone that slightly coming outward. And this is before and after.
