Embracing Sustainability: Overcoming Social Anxiety to Ditch Single-Use Plastics for Plastic-Free July

It’s really embarrassing to bring your own container to the grocery store and ask them to put salmon in it. But it’s plastic free July, so come with me to get over my social anxiety by going to the grocery store and asking the Fishman if I can buy a piece of salmon into take it home in a container I brought from home. I’m challenging myself to ditch single use plastics for a week. And I knew they sold fish and butcher paper, so figured if they can put it in that, why can’t they put it in my Pyrex? And they could. It was a success.

The fishmonger was super chill. I also brought my own jar and filled it with almonds from the bulk section. I wrote down the weight in the PLU, but the cashiers had a hard time subtracting the weight of the jar from it. But they were super kind and eventually figured it out. I felt like a Karen for bringing my own jar and holding up the line and like needing to get three employee likes gracious store employees to figure it out. But everybody was so kind. Shout out to Whole Foods on each street for that because I took it into Pyrex. I could actually just like throw it right into my air fryer and I didn’t have to touch the salmon. So that was fantastic.

I used traditional seasonings for my culture, which is no seasonings cuz I’m white. Well, halfway. Just kidding. I’ve put salt and olive oil, which is basically no seasoning. I dipped it in barbecue sauce, but no vegetables because I’m also a carnivore. No, I’m not. I was just lazy. That’s also not good for the planet. But I guess we can tackle that next month for animal free August or something like that. Okay, bye.
