Controversy at the Paris Olympics: Jordan Childs to Return Bronze Medal following Scoring Dispute

Jordan Childs officially has to return her bronze medal. Following the recent ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that the gymnast’s score changed happened four seconds after the one-minute deadline, thus resulting in her score being reversed, the committee now shares that her medal will now be reallocated to the Romanian gymnast Ana Barbozu. As the IOC announces in a statement August 11th, we are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with the USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal. As fans recall, during the floor finals at the Paris Olympics, Jordan originally placed fifth with a score of 13.666. But after her coaches submitted an inquiry for her routine to be re-evaluated, her score was raised to 13.766, which beat out the original third-place holder, Romanian gymnast Ana Barbozu. The Romanian committee then challenged the score change a day later, stating that the rise in Jordan’s score was made after the one-minute deadline by four seconds and should not be allowed. After deliberation, the International Gymnast Federation and Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on August 10th that the timing of the inquiry was in fact after the deadline and voted to reverse her score, saying in a statement, the inquiry submitted on behalf of Ms. Jordan Childs in the final of the women’s floor exercise was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline.
