Controversy in Tokyo: American Gymnast Stripped of Olympic Medal

Who is this American gymnast stripped of her medal? America’s Jordan Charles won bronze in the women’s floor, and fellow teammate Simone Bowles won silver. Jordan had initially scored 13.666 for her routine, putting her in fifth place and outside the medals. Her coach then appealed the difficulty rating of her routine to Olympic officials, who after a review of Greater Jordan scored a 13.766, jumping her up two places in the table and into third place. That saw her jump past Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu, who was then pushed into fourth place. The Romanian team then protested and their Prime Minister even threatened to boycott the closing ceremony over the controversial scoring decision. In Olympic gymnastics you have one minute to appeal the score, and Romania argue that Team USA made their appeal outside of that one minute window and therefore Jordan should never have had her score upgraded by officials, which would mean the rightful owner of that bronze medal would be Ana Barbosu. The cause of arbitration for sports who settle these sport-related disputes have fallen on Romania’s side, and that means Jordan’s original score will now stand, putting her back into fifth and the Romanian gymnast in third. And plans are now in place for that bronze medal to be transferred. USA Gymnastics say they are devastated by the decision, and Jordan has since removed herself from social media for mental health reasons.
