If you’re scrambling to figure out what to do the first week of school with your students, I’ve got you covered. So I’m a middle school teacher, but you could definitely tweak these to work with upper elementary all the way through high school. So this is kind of a map of my first week. I do have 40 minute class periods, so you might need to tweak it a little bit depending on how much time you have with your students. I’m just going to click through this, but if you want more in-depth videos about any of these activities, I do have them on my page. So day one, we play get to know you first day quiz, kind of is in the style of Kahoot. On day two, we play get to know you dice. It’s like a group activity. It’s so much fun. And then I have my students write a time capsule letter. So we write it that first week and then I give it back to them on the last week of school. Here’s an example of what it looks like. On day three, we play either would you rather or we play four corners. Just kind of depends. I usually keep the other one in my back pocket just in case we have a little extra time. We create a classroom contract. On day four, we play find a student who. That’s really when we go over all of the classroom expectations and procedures. I do go over these like over those first few days, too. But this is like when I sit down and kind of like formally click through everything. Of course, I model and we practice them as we go. Day five, we either play A to Z races or we will play snake. It just kind of depends. Here’s how you play. And then, of course, we continue our class expectations and procedures. If we were to have any extra time, then we would set up our notebooks. I would have the kids set their reading goals. Maybe we’d go down to the library, meet the librarian, get them onto their Google classroom or whatever their online pages. You can have the kids do a reading inventory or a genre personality quiz. You can introduce first chapter Friday on that first Friday. You could have them do their first writing prompt, do it like a about me handout. Whatever you do, like all of these activities are a lot of fun, but you just want to coordinate with the other teachers on your team. That way you don’t like all end up doing the same ones. I said I have all of these already to go for you. It’s in my teacher drive in the back to school folder. And all of these are editable documents. So you would just click on it like say you want to do this time capsule letter, then you can literally edit it however you want. You can change the letter to make it work for your specific grade level. But yeah, I hope that that helps.
