Reviving a Classic Beetle: Replacing Fuel Lines and Preventive Maintenance

So you found the classic Beetle that you were always looking for but it’s been setting for a long time. What’s the first thing you ought to do if you have a running car that’s been setting for a long long time? The first thing I do is replace all the fuel lines and get rid of stuff like that. That just looks hokey right off the bat. Grab yourself some quarter-inch fuel line and get to work. You can see that fuel line right there is the original from 1970 and that thing has seen better days. The factory doesn’t even put clamps on those things if you can see. That’s kind of amazing. It’s probably why a lot of these ended up burning to the ground because your exhaust is right there and it doesn’t take much. Your fuel line goes right above the exhaust so all it takes is one little leak and she’s a bonfire. Bring the marshmallows. It’s never happened to me but I’ve seen it happen to a lot of people and it happened to one of my cars that all that my brother used when I was in the military. And it got so hot by the time they put it out the carburetor melted into the intake. Ruined a perfectly good Volkswagen. A little bit of preventive maintenance can make your car last for years and years. This car right here whoever had this before me must have loved it a lot because this thing’s got 97,000 on it and it is in immaculate condition. And I want to keep it that way. That’s why I’m replacing all the fuel lines. That’s step one. Follow me and we’ll get this thing back on the road. Keep on keeping on. Peace.
