Building a Brighter Future for Baltimore: Councilman Stokes’ Efforts in Youth Recreation and Public Safety

East Monument Street was buzzing today with the sounds of construction. Crews now expanding the Chick Webb Recreation Center, one of four new youth recreation projects brought to Council District 12 with the help of City Councilman Robert Stokes. What happened to young people that live in the city? Yeah. How do they get an opportunity? Stokes has served as Councilman in this district for the past eight years. In a joint project with the Baltimore Sun, we’ve begun probing the effectiveness of council members and in the past four years, Stokes has sponsored 82 ordinances. 47 of them have passed. Among them, three bills addressing crime, three addressing education, 11 addressing quality of life issues, and seven related to government accountability. In an impromptu interview outside City Hall this week, Stokes pointed to his contributions to public safety, shoring up $31,000 in new bicycles for officers and calling for higher wages to help restore the department to full strength.
