The Danger of Unbounded AI in Generating Political Propaganda

This morning, the Mad King posted this image on Truth Social
and the platform formerly known as X.
This is an AI. Generated image
depicting the Democratic National Convention as a communist event.
Now, let’s for the moment
set aside the utter
political illiteracy of suggesting the Democratic Party is
in any way communist.
The Democrats are center right.
What’s important here is that the former president is using a I
to generate political propaganda.
And he’s not alone. Over the past few days,
X has been overflowing with this type of content.
This is an AI. Generated image, again,
depicting Kamala Harris as a communist.
And all these images are created by X’s new AI.
Image generator that has no bounds.
The X image generator running on a grock
allows users to generate images of famous people,
political figures, trademarks,
and all the, all the other things that are actively blocked
in other image generators.
This is an enormous problem,
not only because these tools can generate these types of images,
but because there are people in the world,
including Elon Musk,
who believe that having access to these types of tools
to create this type of disinformation
is about freedom and free speech.
Because while you could make an argument that this is political satire
or political commentary, it’s stupid and incorrect.
But you could make that argument,
this image is directly harmful.
And it doesn’t even matter that people can see that it’s AI. Generated.
This image is a Deliberate lie
that supports a well documented
and very deeply rooted conspiracy theory.
In my job, I talk to a lot of people about a I
and I also talk to a lot of people who build a I tools.
And it is very concerning to me
how many people who are centrally placed in a I
who truly believe that creating unbounded models is not a problem.
They see these types of images and they say,
well, what’s the harm?
And this belies a fundamental detachment
from any kind of understanding of how the real world works
because while the majority of people seeing this image will go,
obviously this is political propaganda, whatever,
there’s also a significant portion of the population
who will see an image like this
and say, oh,
so this is proof that she is actually a communist.
And then they’ll act on that belief.
And here’s the thing, we know these tools are harmful.
So the choice to roll them out
unbounded like this is a direct effort to cause harm.
