The Forgotten Atari: A Closer Look at the Rise and Fall of the Atari Jaguar Console

Most of you may know Atari
as the grandfather of the home video game console
and the birth of the video game market as we know it,
and consequently, almost the death of it just a few short years later.
We’re here to talk about an Atari console that time has forgot.
The Atari Jaguar. Now,
this thing actually launched in November of 1993,
marketed as the first 64 bit console.
Now, what’s so crazy about that is in 1993,
its competition was the Super Nintendo,
Sega Genesis, the Turbo graphics and the 3D O.
Fun fact, though,
it actually wasn’t a 64 bit chip set.
It was actually two 32 bit chip sets.
So they’re kind of fudging the numbers there.
Another fun fact, Atari actually released the Jaguar
after production on their previous console,
which was called Panther, was cancel.
The Atari Jaguar was also known for having the most uncomfortable and
but ugly controller known to console gamers.
And ultimately, this system died
because we had stuff like PlayStation 1
and Nintendo 64 dominating the market.
